What is Kundalini Yoga?
Common Questions
What are Kriyas?
Kriyas, are a series of yoga postures, followed in a particular order to have a specific outcome. A deep innate knowledge of the effect of postures by masters enabled them to create precise asana sequences to address almost any malady, ailment or emotional condition. i.e. there are Kriyas to build the Aura, strengthen the Lungs, fortify the immune & nervous systems, to develop courage etc. The effectiveness of the Kriyas may be explained scientifically by relating the physical action to the stimulus of the glandular, endocrine systems and other internal body functions. The effects may also be esoterically explained, using Chinese and Indian systems of Meridians and Chakras/Nadis respectively. Ultimately, however, the ‘impact’ of a Kriya relies on a number of conditions such as our wellbeing at the start of the practise, dedication, awareness within the practise and duration.
What is a Kundalini Yoga Meditation?
Yogi Bhajan provided many meditations and as with asana based Kriyas they are directed toward specific outcomes. He produced excellent discourses on the ‘Mind & Meditation’ explaining its function, capacities, pitfalls and joys. Most of all he created the ability to address the imbalance of the mind through the application of meditations to balance the 81 facets of mind identified in the system. KY Meditations have a very wide range i.e. To become deeply relaxed, better concentration, increased energy, a strengthened immune system, Enhance Leadership, sharper intuition and much more!
Relaxation?
We so often talk about relaxing or wanting to relax…..but I’m not sure many of us know how? Relaxation is essential to rejuvenation but it is also necessary to effectively integrate and manifest change, either physical or mental. Like all forms of Yoga, KY incorporates relaxation into the practise largely as a space to consolidate the effects of the yoga practise. Relaxation can take place directly after the Kriya and precede the mediation or it may come right at the end of the class. Students are advised to bring something to cover themselves with to retain ‘heat and energy’.
What should I wear?
You should wear light fitted clothing suitable for exercise i.e. yoga pants, jogging bottom etc. KY often wear white as this helps with developing the radiant body, but this is not a requirement for the class.
What should I bring?
Yourself!! and a strong intention for a great class. Water and something to cover yourself with (shawl/blanket) for the relaxation would be useful
